Snacks are short-form, midweek drops featuring brands I just discovered, shops I stumbled on, artists I think you’ll love… little odes to the things I find that I’m sending straight over to you.
This week’s Art Snack is a treat. Meet Sandrine Torredemer, or La Filature, a textile artist known for her embroidered beach scenes, beaded vignettes, and tiny people made of bits of fabric.

Sandrine Torredemer originally hails from Perpignan, a city in the South of France near the Mediterranean coast and the border of Spain. The seaside town and its many seasonal visitors are clear inspirations for her work, which looks like postcards from a summer holiday carefully composed of wispy threads, scraps of fabric, and tiny stitches.
I immediately recognized the photograph the piece below is based on: an overhead shot of loungers at the Jardin des Tuileries by photographer Guillaume Lavrut. It led me to find other pieces of her work inspired by images created by artists like Martin Parr and Henri Matisse, and even photos shared by brands and influencers. I just love it all.
I especially love the tiny people she creates. How she’s able to convey so much movement and style within just a couple of inches of embroidery is beyond me.

Room Recipe: A Laurel-Canyon-in-the-’60s-Inspired Bedroom in the Hollywood Hills
Welcome back to Room Recipe, a column on À La Carte where we stare at an image of a room we love for a very long time, then break down its “ingredients” into specific items and themes. The goal is never to copy, but instead to get to the bottom of why certain rooms just *work* and to understand how we can translate that inspiration into real life...
The January Specials: Chalets, the Ballet, and a Perfect Trench Coat
Welcome to January’s Specials. As I mentioned the other week, I’m restructuring the way I do these newsletters a bit, and one of the changes I’m making is to absorb my Sample Platter newsletters (those monthly “what’s on my wishlist,” “a house I wish I lived in,” etc. round ups) into my monthly...
Side Order: Dinner Club
I turned 30 about six weeks before the pandemic hit, and unlike so many of my friends who were also celebrating big birthdays that year, I was lucky to have a chance to gather a bunch of my best friends in a room before we all would go into lockdown. I vowed to throw a party for every milestone birthday going forward, if not because I...
I love fiber art. I feel like we will see a massive resurgence of this in the next several years as we "reject" digital and machinistic forms of artmaking in favor of more "analog" art forms that celebrate the human element. Thank you for sharing this!
Oh my gosh I love this so much. It reminds me of a lot of the art my 97-year-old grandma has in her home from Nice, France from way back when, but invariably chicer. Thank you for pointing us in this artist's direction!
