Plus One is a new column where we’ll be tagging along with some of the best people with the best recs in town. Think of it like a highly specific city guide!
This month’s Plus One guest is
, a London-based stylist, creative consultant, and writer. Eleanor is my go-to rec for anyone looking for interiors-related content—via her Substack, , and her Instagram by the same name, Eleanor shares beautiful spaces from as far as the eye can see, from special hotels and well-designed restaurants to homes and homeware shops filled with treasures. She also writes for some of my favorite publications: Cabana Magazine, British Vogue, and House & Garden, to name a few.Aside from the many, many recommendations I’ve jotted down over the years I’ve followed Eleanor on Instagram, one of my favorite things about peeking into her London life is that she lives in the Barbican Estate, a brutalist post-war development that’s home to a museum, gardens, a martini bar, a movie theater, and upwards of 2,000 flats. When I studied abroad (100 years ago) I used to visit the Barbican for movie nights, art shows, and lectures, not knowing that decades into the future I’d have an internet friend that lives there. Eleanor regularly shares the highs and lows of living in this architecturally significant place, from the unique design details within her flat to the droves of Harry Styles fans that visit every day. (Harry’s video for “As It Was” was filmed on the terrace downstairs.)
Half of my trip to London last year was planned around things I learned about through Eleanor, so I’m so excited to share her Plus One, including her favorite places to wander alone, grab coffee, and take out-of-towners. And, I’ve even made a Google Map of all her recs! If you’re planning a trip, let this be your trusted tour guide.
Eleanor’s favorite hidden gem: “I love a house museum and Sir John Soane's Museum in Holborn is a fascinating window into the home of a prominent neoclassical architect and obsessive collector. It’s also free to visit! I’d also recommend 2 Willow Road in Hampstead—a mid-century home designed by Ernő Goldfinger with so many forward-thinking ideas—and Leighton House in Holland Park, which feels like you’ve been transported to another country!
The house tour I haven’t yet managed to get to because it’s so hard to get tickets is The Cosmic House, also in Holland Park. It’s a slightly bonkers postmodernist home that wouldn’t look out of place with the Poor Things set design.”
Eleanor’s favorite home store: “For oodles of home inspiration in one tiny geographical area, Pimlico Road in Chelsea is where many of the big names in design have a shop. I always stop by Howe, Rose Uniacke, Pinch, Robert Kime, Soane Britain, And Objects, Modernity, Plain English, and Sinclair Till.
For something smaller and more suitcase-friendly, Choosing Keeping stationery shop in Covent Garden always charms me to death and I can’t leave without a pack of note cards or a new pen.”
Eleanor’s favorite spot to spend money: “Anywhere that sells overpriced food in attractive packaging—I’m a sucker for a small, specialist food shop full of beautifully designed tins and jars. Superette in Islington, Supermarket of Dreams in Holland Park, and Panzer’s in St John’s Wood always lure me in with punchy typography, and I’ll never leave with less than a jam or an olive oil.”
